(Standards students test for report card)
K.RF.3.b-1 Recognize short vowels sounds within common spellings.
How you can help: Ask your child what (short) vowel sound they hear in words.
(cat - /a/ bus - /u/ sit - /i/ bed - /e/ stop - /o/)
K.RL.9.d Compare the adventures and experiences of characters in familiar stories
How you can help: When reading a story, ask them how they are similar to a character and how they are different. (Goldilocks and the Three Bears – Goldilocks is a child and so am I. She doesn't like hard or too soft beds. She is a girl and I am a boy)
K.RF.3.c Read common high frequency words by sight
How you can help: Practice sight words with them. Play games, and go through word ring. Try writing a few words on a bathroom mirror with a dry erase marker or put them on a sticky note.
K.SL.3.c Answer who, what, where, and how questions
How you can help: Ask these questions after reading a book or story. The books that are sent home each week are a great book to use for this standard. (Who is this story about? What happened in the story? Where did the story take place? When did the story take place? How did the problem in the story get solved?)
K.RF.2.eo-4 Add individual sounds to simple one-syllable words to make new words
How you can help: Have them change the word cat to bat, bin to tin, fun to sun. Writing them down is helpful!
K.RF.2.e-2 Segment one syllable words into phonemes.
How you can help: This is chopping words into individual sounds. Have them chop words like cat into /c/a/t drum into d/r/u/m black into b/l/a/ck
How you can help: Ask your child what (short) vowel sound they hear in words.
